If you want to use any of these quotations in Japanese in your essay, you’ll need to translate or summarise them in English. You should do that before you write the essay, because translating—and revising the translations—takes a long time.

“ugliness” is the nominal form of “ugly”. You could also try the combined “beauty/ugliness”

Hansel was trying to bite off the toffee apple doorknocker, when the door flew open. “Aaaargh!” he yelled, as an old woman hobbled out. She was as wide as a barrel and uglier than a toad. Her bulging eyes fixed on the two children and she smiled., showing her rotten teeth.

Poor children! The old woman seems good and kind, but she’s really a witch. The witch immediately locks Hansel in a room, and poor Gretel does the housework!

Hansel and Gretel did not know that the old woman was really a wicked old witch, who trapped children. She couldn’t see very well, but she had a fine sense of smell. She could smell children coming.

Maybe the sense of smell is significant? Isn’t it like some animals?
